Saturday, September 21st

Donna Jackson, Mount Shasta local, and her partner, Michael Chudzik, will be leading our Castle Lake/Heart Lake S.O.A.R. Adventure. This special date is World Gratitude Day and International Peace Day! There will be two wonderful options for the day:

1) Castle Lake to Heart Lake Hike (moderate to challenging - led by Michael due to Donna's foot injury)
2) Stroll around Castle Lake west trail (easy to moderate - led by Donna)

Here is the detailed itinerary for the day:

8:30 AM - Meet at CSLR parking lot to coordinate car pools
8:45 AM - Leave for Castle Lake (72 miles, approximately 90 minutes)
10:15 AM - Arrive at Castle Lake parking lot end by lakeshore to meet Donna and Michael
10:15 AM - Gather at water's edge on north shore for Opening Circle, Prayer and Lake Offering, Castle Lake history, west and east trail layout, lake area bearings (30 minutes)
10:45 AM - Choose adventure option 1 or 2 below (10:45 AM to 2:00 PM)
2:00 PM - Entire group reconvenes at south shore of Castle Lake for closing circle.
3:00 PM - Stop at Berryvale Grocery in Mount Shasta for refreshments before returning to Redding, or stay and join the Drum Circle and potluck at the Buddha Barn in Dunsmuir with Donna (see details below).
3:30 PM - Leave for CSLR
4:30 PM - Arrive back at CSLR

10:45 AM - Heart Lake to Castle Lake hike (moderate to challenging)
12:00 PM - Heart Lake picnic lunch, swim, activities, rest and immersion
1:00 PM - Return descent to Castle Lake and rejoin the rest of the group at the south shore of the lake

What to bring: Hiking poles suggested (optional), good walking/hiking shoes, layered clothing, day pack, water, bag lunch, swimsuit and towel, sunscreen, sun protection (hat, visor, sunglasses, etc). Hiking level is rated moderate to difficult due to an incline with some areas of uneven stone stepping on ridge ascent. On a challenge scale from 1 to 5, Donna would rate this at a level 3, as it may present some challenges for those with knee, foot or ankle issues. Elevation - High point at 6,050 feet with an approximate ascent of 600 feet for a 2.2 mile round trip hike.

10:45 AM - Castle Lake west trail saunter. Trail hiking level is easy to moderate with end of trail option of a short, moderate to difficult descent to small beach. Elevation - 5440 feet and trail length of 2 flat miles.

What to bring: Hiking poles (optional), good walking/hiking shoes, layered clothing, day pack, water, bag lunch, swimsuit and towel, sunscreen, sun protection (hat, visor, sunglasses, etc), water toys, camera, kayak, paddle board, floaties, etc.

OPEN INVITE: Drum Circle and Potluck at the Buddha Barn in Dunsmuir
There is a wonderful Drum Circle Gathering and Potluck at The Buddha Barn at 5:00 PM behind Serena Knight's house at 5341 Dunsmuir Avenue in Dunsmuir (only a couple miles south of I-5 from Mount Shasta City). We have all been invited! They offer a quarterly gathering of some long term Shasta people. Serena's father, Skip, is an amazing drummer and she is a belly dancer and children's book author. Those of you choosing this adventure extension can go to Berryvale at 3:00 PM with the group to purchase your potluck dish to bring. Donna has offered to open her home to anyone who wants to change/refresh between the hike and the Potluck/Drum Circle event. Her address is 816 Davis Place Road and is only a couple of miles and 5 minutes north of Mount Shasta City. The potluck starts at 5:00 PM and is followed by a participator or audience drum circle with some belly dancing instruction led by Serena with an option to either witness or dance.
