We have the unique opportunity to have Rev. Helen Cummings from the Redding Zen Priory offer a one afternoon workshop on the teachings from Buddhism focusing on Great Compassion. She will provide the text for us from which is referencing the Kanzeon Scripture. Her wisdom is timely and we are fortunate to have this sacred time with her. Following are her words of description for her intention in sharing with us. “In Buddhism, Great Compassion shows itself in many forms. The personification of Compassion is known as Avalokiteshwara - she who hears the cries of the world - in Sanskrit. In Japanese she is known as Kanzeon Bosatsu or Kannon. In Chinese she is Kuan-shi-yin or Kuan Yin. Our text for this class is the twenty-fifth chapter (The Universal Gate Chapter) of the Lotus Scripture in which the Buddha explains the activity of Great Compassion in the world. This Scripture, along with elaborating on many wonderful aspects of Great Compassion, depicts many and varied life-threatening situations, teaching us to seek the Heart of Compassion within the most catastrophic of circumstances. We will explore the relevance of this text in our current daily life.”
