MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Ancestral Wisdom, New Thought

“In the Western tradition there is a recognized hierarchy of beings, with, of course, the human being on top – the pinnacle of evolution, the darling of Creation – and the plants at the bottom. But in Native ways of knowing, human people are often referred to as ‘the younger brothers of Creation.’ We say that humans have the least experience with how to live and thus the most to learn – we must look to our teachers among the other species for guidance. Their wisdom is apparent in the way that they live.” ~~ Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, Milkweed Editions, 2013, page 9

What a great way to start the New Year by reinforcing our spiritual backbone. If you have been listening over time to the messages of Ernest Holmes, it is familiar to you to hear his wisdom inspiring us to “stay open at the top”. The Centers for Spiritual Living annual theme for 2026 is leaning into this concept throughout the year. In a unique way, we will be dovetailing the core teachings of Ernest Holmes in The Science of Mind with the Indigenous wisdoms of all time throughout January. This month you will hear more gems from the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. In The Science of Mind, we are reminded that a greater good is unfolding all the time for each of us. Indigenous wisdom has always supported this idea by recognizing and honoring the interconnectedness of all.

It is interesting that Rev. Dr. Mary Mitchell has chosen this new historical  perspective to teach this quarter. The curriculum, titled Ancient Wisdom and Science of Mind, is just being released from Centers for Spiritual Living. It will be a certificated course that no one has taken before. We are tilling the soil of our minds to see what has been rooted in the past and serves us today with new nutrients of wisdom. We are projecting her class to start in January as soon as we can get access to the material.

There is something so exciting about the infinite possibilities of a New Year. We can set our minds on positive outcomes and encourage one another to stay in the zone of spiritual awakening. Every workshop and class is designed to support our inner growth and wisdom. Take the oath to fill your time with uplifting connections to your Center so you can build community around you. It is vital for your wellbeing. May this New Year 2026 be blessing upon blessing. May we greet each other knowing it is so.

Happy New Year with all my heart and love,

Rev. Sue MillerBorn

Please Note: This used to be called Reality Retreat Meditation. In Sanatana Dharma, the ideal is always to be one with consciousness. The journey and purpose of life is to realize this ideal, through inner transformation, which is only possible through spiritual awareness. Our Master, His Holiness Sri Muralidhara Swamiji says, “Joy and sorrow are the only two known states of mind, as far as man is concerned. Divinity is to get past this dual state and be in a constant state of bliss”. Reality Retreat Meditation is one where we aim to retreat back to Reality (consciousness) through the constant repetition of the Divine Mahamantra – the sound from the Happiness plane. The unique changing pattern of the Mahamantra (Greatest Mantra), 6-3-2 cycle, naturally takes our vision inward. Constant and dedicated repetition guarantees mental strength, proven to lead to happiness. This meditation strives to inspire all in the path of inner excellence, and to realize that our happiness is in our control. It helps to improve attention, relieve stress, bring positivity, and face challenges with poise. Contact Nithya at (530) 355-8384 with questions.

“Learning to write is not a linear process - there is no longer A to B to C ways to become a good writer. A beginner mindset is what we must come back to every time we sit down to write. Each time it is a new journey with no maps.”

“We learn to write what our mind sees and feels, not what it thinks. We explore the rugged edge of thoughts, riding the moments when waves of human consciousness appear and we provide personal details to express the ride.”

Now can you see why this class is so special?! Natalie recommends an easy-to-write-in notebook and a pen that enables you to write fast. REQUIRED BOOK: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg. BEFORE EACH CLASS: There are readings and short exercises to complete before each class. During class, we will voluntarily share what we have written and learn from each other; however, keeping personal writings to yourself is respected. During class, we will also do some short (2 to 3 minute) writing that she recommends and occasionally she has a test for us as we progress. You can finish it yourself or get together with others in the class or friends and continue, since I am confident that this book is so rich, you might complete it within months! Questions? Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic Yogic path, including disciplines, postures (asana), purification procedures (shatkriya), gestures (mudra), breathing (pranayama), and meditation. The Hatha Yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas understood as physical exercises (postures). It is also recognized as a stress-reducing practice that attempts to balance body and mind. Asanas teach poise, balance, and strength, and are practiced to improve the body’s physical health, and to clear the mind in preparation for meditation. We will continue our usual schedule every Monday and Wednesday as we reenter a routine for our wellbeing. Zoom option will still be available. Please feel free to contact Rev. I appreciate her heart wisdom as she describes her passion in this work as, “Holding your hand as you do hard things…you are exactly where you need to be.” As sages, we each face the last portions of our lives. We put off what we can’t quite deal with…yet we can do it. As we support one another in this conversation, we lean into empowerment.

A Special Offering from Rev. Helen Cummings from the

Redding Zen Priory

Wednesday, February 11, 2026

3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Social Hall

A Gift of Dana is Appreciated (love offering)

We have the unique opportunity to have Rev. Helen Cummings from the Redding Zen Priory offer a one afternoon      workshop on the teachings from Buddhism focusing on Great Compassion. She will provide the text for us from which is referencing the Kanzeon Scripture. Her wisdom is timely and we are fortunate to have this sacred time with her. Following are her words of description for her intention in sharing with us. “In Buddhism, Great Compassion shows itself in many forms. The personification of Compassion is known as Avalokiteshwara - she who hears the cries of the world - in Sanskrit. In Japanese she is known as Kanzeon Bosatsu or Kannon. In Chinese she is Kuan-shi-yin or Kuan Yin. Our text for this class is the twenty-fifth chapter (The Universal Gate Chapter) of the Lotus Scripture in which the Buddha explains the   activity of Great Compassion in the world. This Scripture, along with elaborating on many wonderful aspects of Great  Compassion, depicts many and varied life-threatening situations, teaching us to seek the Heart of Compassion within the most catastrophic of circumstances. We will explore the relevance of this text in our current daily life.”

AWAKENING TO ONENESS WITH LIFE MEDITATION
With Jill Matthews
Second and Fourth Thursdays of Each Month
(except on holidays)
6:30 to 8:00 A.M. in the Meditation Pavilion
Suggested $10 Donation per Person

Join me as we awaken more deeply to life by learning and practicing meditation and mindfulness techniques. Open to vibrant presence as we release what no longer serves us, embrace the present moment through the breath, and raise our vibration by inviting gratitude and love more fully into our lives. The teachings I share are based upon the education I received during a two-year meditation and mindfulness certification training led by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. These concepts and practices also come from several years of mediation with a local monk, from a broad variety of books, and from an array of spiritual leaders. I believe there is something meaningful and significant to learn from each experience in life and from opening to a variety of methods and belief systems. My desire is to share my enthusiasm for meditation, and for deepening a connection to All. Some of my goals for this group are that together we will create a sense of deep connection and community. That our meditation group will be a place where each participant will feel safe and accepted. Where there is no one right way, and where kindness and openness are always present. We will learn various tools that can assist in living with more peace and presence in our lives. Some topic examples are:

Dealing with difficult emotions
Accessing your Higher Self
Softening around stress
Present Moment Living
Confronting Fear
Finding answers
Mental Clarity
Grounding
Gratitude

Each week we will read and discuss passages from the book, share personal reflections, and explore how these timeless truths apply to our own lives in 2026 and beyond.

Your instructor met Ram Dass (then still Dr. Richard Alpert) at age 12 and will share rarely heard, first-hand stories of the warm friendship his family enjoyed with him from the mid-1960s well into the 1970s. We’ll also enrich our time together with carefully chosen short video and audio clips, occasional guest teachers who studied with him, podcast excerpts, and gentle experiential practices drawn from his teachings.  .

Whether you are brand-new to Ram Dass or a longtime lover of Be Here Now, this class offers both an inspiring overview of his essential message and a supportive space to integrate these teachings into daily life. Come ready to open your heart, question your identity, and enjoy plenty of lively, meaningful discussions about how these spiritual principles are showing up and being applied in our everyday lives.

The People’s Poet in His Own Words

With Max Walter

Saturday, February 21, 2026

7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary

$21.00 per Person ($1 discount with cash or check payment)

In 2019, Max Walter, a former elementary school teacher, created the Spirit of Carl Sandburg: The People’s Poet in His Own Words. He was drawn to the poet’s take on political themes, such as Abraham Lincoln’s call for freedom, and the poet’s role in politics, as well as the universal themes of children and family, the ephemeral nature of beauty, time, mortality, and death. The play consists of Walter’s

impersonation of Sandburg through recitation of poems, stories, and songs, as well as some of Lincoln’s most profound

utterances. Max Walter is deeply grateful for the honor of impersonating and representing Carl Sandburg - someone who speaks compellingly to the issues of both his own era and today.
