In 2019, Max Walter, a former elementary school teacher, created the Spirit of Carl Sandburg: The People’s Poet in His Own Words. He was drawn to the poet’s take on political themes, such as Abraham Lincoln’s call for freedom, and the poet’s role in politics, as well as the universal themes of children and family, the ephemeral nature of beauty, time, mortality, and death. The play consists of Walter’s
impersonation of Sandburg through recitation of poems, stories, and songs, as well as some of Lincoln’s most profound
utterances. Max Walter is deeply grateful for the honor of impersonating and representing Carl Sandburg - someone who speaks compellingly to the issues of both his own era and today.
